News Briefs And New Perspectives

I slept really well last night, and woke up feeling rested, for once. After a breakfast of toast and peanut butter (which I have been craving lately) at the Ratty, I headed to class.

Much of the day in class was taken up by presentations. One of our class assignments was to find and read a recently published article relating to women in society, and then tell the class about it. Everyone picked important current events topics, ranging from managing finances to sex trafficking; it was all interesting (and sometimes shocking) to hear about, and I learned a lot. I am looking forward to presenting tomorrow.

We had two sets of guest speakers today.  In the morning, a Brown professor named Wendy Schiller came in to talk to us. I really enjoyed listening to her. She shared her life experiences from college, working for a state senator, being a professor, and being a woman in the workforce. She is one of the best professors at Brown University, and is also known for being a difficult grader. She was very personable and gave straight-forward, honest advice to us.

Our second set of guest speakers was a panel of five current female students from Brown University. Kisa asked them several questions that I was interested to know the answer to, including a their experiences as being women in college. The general consensus from most of them was that Brown has a really strong support system of intelligent, encouraging women, although one girl did say that she experienced a class where she was one of very few women, and wasn't always taken seriously.

We also heard about how the students dealt with time management, whether they experienced homesickness, and what their most memorable experiences from Brown were. In response to the last topic, all of the women agreed that they couldn't pick out a single most memorable experience from Brown. Irene said that she remembers lots of deep late-night conversations with her friends as being some wonderful memories.

After class, I hung out on one of the lawns for about an hour and wrote in my journal as part of my homework assignment. Later in the evening, after dinner, I went with my friend Brittany to the library and finished preparing my presentation for tomorrow. It felt good to be productive. I am looking forward to making the most of the last few days that I have here.

  1. Molly,

It's a shame that those of us not in your class could not share in those presentations. Just from the little mentioned in your blogs they all sound so interesting.

I'm especially looking forward to reading tomorrow's blogs about the send set of presentations.
